Would you like to visualize all stages of the bioprocess using LC/MS?

Diverse versatility from upstream to downstream.

The introduction of LC/MS in bioprocessing is progressing overseas. You might be thinking, "I use LC, but MS is difficult..." BioAccord is here to solve that concern. With its simple operability and high reproducibility, it is a recommended system for bioprocess engineers. Do you have any such impressions or questions? ■ Is evaluating aggregates sufficient with just LC? With LC/MS, you can also confirm the intact mass. ■ Is it enough to just confirm major post-translational modifications? With LC/MS, you can perform peptide mapping and post-translational modifications in a single analysis. ■ Is it sufficient to monitor only amino acids? With LC/MS, you can comprehensively detect components* in the culture medium, and integration with JMP is also possible. *Dependent on component concentration. ■ How do you preprocess samples taken from a bioreactor? It's easier than you think. After filtering out particulates, you can simply dilute with water or buffer to measure the intact mass of components and antibodies in the medium. Waters has a walk-up solution to automate this process. *For details, please download the catalog.

[Analysis Case] Component Analysis of Lithium-Ion Secondary Battery Binders

Identification of organic components by pyrolysis GC/MS.

Lithium-ion secondary batteries use a wide variety of materials, ranging from metals and inorganic substances to organic materials, and from solids to liquids. The physical properties and combinations of each material significantly reflect the characteristics and reliability of the device, making accurate analysis and evaluation of the materials necessary. In this study, the anode of the lithium-ion secondary battery was measured using pyrolysis GC/MS (pyro-GC/MS), and it was found that the binder material is based on SBR (styrene-butadiene latex). Additionally, decomposition products of the binder and aromatic substances presumed to be reaction products were also detected.

[Analysis Case] Analysis of Smartphone Sealants by Pyrolysis GC/MS

Analysis of UV-curable materials is possible through two-stage heating.

Using a two-stage heating method with thermal decomposition GC/MS, we analyzed the material of the sealing agent around the display of commercially available smartphones. By heating the sample at a low temperature (250°C) and measuring the gas components generated using GC/MS, we can detect residual monomers and low molecular weight additives (polymerization initiators, antioxidants). Subsequently, by heating at a high temperature (550°C), we can decompose the polymers and estimate their constituent components. This revealed that the sealing agent is made of a UV-curable material.

[Case Study] Development of a Simultaneous Analysis Method for Pesticides

We will develop a custom analysis method for the target component!

At MST, we can accept requests for the consideration and development of analytical methods based on customer needs. In this example, we developed a simultaneous analysis method for pesticide components in water. Traditionally, pesticide analysis has been complicated due to separate pretreatment and measurement methods for each component. If multiple components can be measured at once, it can reduce sample volume and analysis costs, enabling more efficient analysis. In this example, we established a method that allows for easy confirmation of the presence of approximately 70 pesticide components down to low concentration levels by using solid-phase extraction for pretreatment and LC/MS/MS for measurement.

[Analysis Case] Analysis of Polyester by Reaction Thermal Decomposition GC/MS Method

Detailed structural analysis of polyester is possible.

When conducting structural analysis of condensation-type polymers such as polyester, the conventional thermal decomposition GC/MS method may result in complex decomposition products that do not allow for structural estimation. In such cases, the reactive thermal decomposition GC/MS method, which involves the coexistence of derivatization reagents during thermal decomposition, is effective. This example introduces the thermal decomposition of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide. While numerous peaks were observed with the conventional thermal decomposition method, the reactive thermal decomposition method detected simpler decomposition products that reflected the monomer structure.

[Analysis Case] Structural Analysis of Polyimide Resin

Structural analysis of polyimide resin is possible using thermal decomposition GC/MS method.

Polyimide resin is excellent in heat resistance, chemical resistance, and toughness, and also has high insulation properties, making it used in various applications, including insulation materials for electronic devices. However, due to its almost non-existent solvent solubility, the analytical methods for structural determination are limited. This case introduces an example of thermal decomposition GC/MS measurement of commercially available polyimide resin. Multiple thermal decomposition products reflecting the polymer structure were observed in high-boiling components with long retention times, demonstrating that this method is a powerful means for structural determination.

Analysis of odor components using GCMS analysis method.

It is an analytical method for separating and qualitatively and quantitatively analyzing optical isomers and cis-trans isomers.

The analysis of odor components is effective for evaluating the scent that characterizes a product and for identifying the causes of unpleasant odors. Many odor components exist as stereoisomers, and isomers can have completely different scents from each other. When distinguishing and analyzing stereoisomers, methods such as NMR may be used; however, this case will introduce an example using GC/MS. Chromatography allows for the clear separation and evaluation of target components from other components. Additionally, by using columns designed for isomer separation, it is possible to evaluate various stereoisomers that cannot be separated using general-purpose columns. Measurement method: GC/MS Product fields: Cosmetics, daily necessities, food, environment Analysis objectives: Composition evaluation, identification, product investigation For more details, please download the materials or contact us.

Investigation case of strange odors from products

Conduct qualitative analysis of the "main components of odor" and "allergen identification" generated from the sample.

We would like to introduce a case study regarding a complaint from a product user about health issues caused by the product. This investigation focused on the odor components of the product using a Headspace Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (HS-GC-MS) system. A portion of the product was sealed in a container and heated to release odor components. The released odor components in the container were measured, and the detected components were analyzed. It was found that the detected odor components were substances that can cause allergies (limonene and menthol). Our company proposes appropriate methods tailored to customer requests and the characteristics of samples, providing reliable data backed by extensive experience and technical expertise. [Case Overview] - Measurement and qualitative analysis of volatile organic compounds containing odor components in the sample - Identification of the main odor components - Clarification of the volatile organic compounds generated *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.

[Case Study] Identification of Unknown Components Using Directly Introduced Probe High-Resolution GCMS

Rapid identification of unknown components using high-resolution GCMS with a direct introduction probe without chromatography.

The detection and identification of compounds of unknown origin is challenging, often involving complex volcanic processes, and it takes time to obtain results. Additionally, high reliability is required for final identification, which necessitates the confirmation of multifaceted information. By measuring the molecular weight of chemical substances with sufficient accuracy, it is possible to determine the elemental composition and identify the chemical structure of the substance using isotope ratios and fragmentation patterns. Using high-resolution GCMS allows for the reliable detection of target components from complex matrices due to its high mass resolution and mass accuracy. This technical document introduces a method for reliably identifying unknown substances almost instantaneously. It connects a direct injection probe to our high-resolution GCMS (Orbitrap GC-MS system) and rapidly identifies compounds using both electron ionization and chemical ionization.
